What Is Neon?
Neon is serverless Postgres. It’s fully compatible Postgres with auto-scaling, scale-to-zero, and database branching. You get a Postgres connection string, connect with any Postgres client or ORM, and Neon handles the infrastructure. When your database is idle, it scales to zero and you stop paying.
The defining feature is database branching. Like Git branches for code, Neon lets you create a branch of your database that contains all your data at a point in time. Use it for development, testing, preview deployments, or migrations. The branch is copy-on-write, so it’s instant and uses no additional storage until data diverges.
Key Features
Database Branching
Create a branch with neon branches create. The branch is a full copy of your database at that moment, ready in seconds. Use it for PR preview environments (each PR gets its own database), migration testing (try the migration on a branch first), or development (work with real data without affecting production).
Scale to Zero
When your database has no active connections, Neon suspends the compute and you stop paying for it. When a connection arrives, the compute starts in under a second. This makes Neon free to run for side projects, staging environments, and anything with intermittent traffic.
Autoscaling
Configure minimum and maximum compute units. Neon scales between them based on load. No capacity planning, no manual resize, no downtime for scaling. The database handles traffic spikes by scaling up and then scales back down when load decreases.
Fully Compatible Postgres
Neon runs Postgres. Not a Postgres-compatible clone, not a subset — actual Postgres with extensions, JSONB, full-text search, and everything else. Your existing Postgres queries, ORMs, and tools work without modification.
Who Is This For?
- Developers who want Postgres without managing infrastructure
- Teams that need database branching for development and testing workflows
- Side projects and staging environments that benefit from scale-to-zero
- Next.js and Vercel users who want integrated database deployments
Pros
- Database branching (instant, copy-on-write)
- Scale to zero (free when idle)
- Fully compatible Postgres
- Generous free tier
- Autoscaling without downtime
- Vercel and Prisma integrations
Cons
- Cold start latency on scale-from-zero
- Usage-based pricing can surprise at scale
- Not all Postgres extensions supported
- Connection pooling required for serverless
- Newer than RDS/Cloud SQL (less enterprise track record)
Verdict
Neon is the Postgres that modern application developers want: serverless, branching, and auto-scaling. The database branching feature alone is worth the switch — having a copy of your production database for every PR preview environment changes how you develop and test.
Scale-to-zero makes Neon free for side projects and staging. Autoscaling makes it handle production traffic without capacity planning. And it’s real Postgres, so you bring your existing queries, ORMs, and knowledge. For new projects in 2026, Neon is the default Postgres choice.
