What Is Supabase?
Supabase is an open-source backend platform built on PostgreSQL. It provides a managed Postgres database, authentication, file storage, edge functions, real-time subscriptions, and vector embeddings. Think of it as Firebase built on open-source tools instead of proprietary ones.
The key difference from Firebase: Supabase uses Postgres, not a NoSQL document store. You get SQL, joins, foreign keys, indexes, and the full power of a relational database. When you outgrow Supabase’s hosted service, you can self-host it or migrate to any Postgres provider. No vendor lock-in.
Key Features
Postgres Database
A managed Postgres instance with a table editor, SQL editor, and auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs. Row-level security (RLS) policies control access at the database level. Extensions like pgvector (vector search), PostGIS (geospatial), and pg_cron (scheduled tasks) work out of the box.
Authentication
Email/password, magic links, social logins (Google, GitHub, Apple, 20+), phone auth, and SSO. Auth integrates with row-level security: database policies reference the authenticated user, so authorization happens at the Postgres level.
Edge Functions
Deno-based serverless functions that run at the edge. Use them for webhooks, API integrations, or any server-side logic. Edge Functions connect to your Supabase database with the same client library.
Real-Time
Subscribe to database changes over WebSocket. When a row inserts, updates, or deletes, connected clients receive the change immediately. Build real-time dashboards, chat, notifications, or collaborative features without polling.
Storage
S3-compatible file storage with access policies, image transformations, and CDN delivery. Upload files from the client with the same auth context as the database.
Who Is This For?
- Developers who want a managed Postgres backend
- Teams migrating from Firebase who want SQL
- Projects that need auth + database + storage in one platform
- Anyone who values open source and no vendor lock-in
Pros
- PostgreSQL (SQL, joins, RLS, extensions)
- Open source (self-host option)
- Auth, storage, edge functions included
- Real-time subscriptions
- Auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs
- Generous free tier (2 projects)
- No vendor lock-in
Cons
- Free tier pauses after 1 week of inactivity
- Edge Functions are Deno-only
- Less mature than Firebase
- Dashboard can be slow on large databases
- Migration tooling could be better
Verdict
Supabase is the best choice for developers who want a managed backend with a real database. PostgreSQL gives you SQL, joins, and the full relational model that Firebase’s Firestore lacks. Row-level security policies mean authorization lives in the database, not scattered across your application code.
The open-source model matters. If Supabase the company disappears, you can self-host every component. Your data is in Postgres, your functions are Deno scripts, your auth uses GoTrue. Nothing is proprietary. For a new project that needs auth + database + storage, Supabase is the default recommendation.
