What Is Turso?

Turso is an edge-hosted database built on libSQL, an open-source fork of SQLite. Your database runs at the edge — replicated to locations close to your users — with the simplicity and reliability of SQLite. Reads are local (sub-millisecond), writes replicate to the primary and then to all replicas.

The key innovation is embedded replicas. Turso can sync a full replica of your database into your application process. Reads hit a local SQLite file with zero network latency. Writes go to the primary over the network. This gives you the performance of an in-process database with the durability of a cloud service.

Key Features

Edge Replicas

Your database is replicated to edge locations worldwide. A user in Tokyo reads from a Tokyo replica; a user in London reads from a London replica. Reads are sub-millisecond because the data is local.

Embedded Replicas

Sync a full copy of your database into your application. Reads hit a local SQLite file — no network round trip. The replica stays in sync with the primary automatically. This is the fastest possible read path: an in-process SQLite query.

libSQL

Turso is built on libSQL, an open-source fork of SQLite. libSQL adds features SQLite doesn’t have: native replication, ALTER TABLE improvements, and vector search. It’s fully compatible with SQLite — your existing SQLite tools and libraries work.

Per-Tenant Databases

Create a database per user, per tenant, or per workspace. Turso supports up to 10,000 databases on the free tier. This model is ideal for multi-tenant SaaS: each tenant gets their own isolated database, with no shared-table complexity.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Sub-millisecond reads (edge + embedded replicas)
  • SQLite compatibility (tools, libraries, simplicity)
  • Per-tenant databases at scale
  • Generous free tier (500 DBs, 9 GB)
  • Built on open-source libSQL
  • Embedded replicas for zero-latency reads

Cons

  • Write latency depends on primary location
  • SQLite limitations (no stored procedures, limited types)
  • Newer service (less production track record)
  • No JOINs across databases
  • libSQL diverges from upstream SQLite

Verdict

Turso brings SQLite into the cloud era. The embedded replica model is genuinely innovative: your application reads from a local SQLite file with zero network latency, while writes replicate to a durable cloud service. For read-heavy applications, this is the fastest possible architecture.

The per-tenant database model is a natural fit for SaaS. Instead of complex row-level security and shared tables, each tenant gets an isolated database. The free tier supports 500 databases, so you can start building without cost pressure.
