What Is Fly.io?
Fly.io runs your applications in micro-VMs on hardware distributed across 30+ regions worldwide. Deploy a Docker container, and Fly.io runs instances of it in regions close to your users. A user in Tokyo hits an instance in Tokyo. A user in London hits an instance in London. The latency improvement is not incremental — it’s the difference between 200ms and 20ms for the first byte.
The underlying technology is Firecracker, Amazon’s open-source micro-VM hypervisor built for Lambda. Each application runs in its own isolated VM, not a shared container. You get VM-level isolation with container-level deployment speed.
Key Features
Global Distribution
Deploy to any combination of 30+ regions. Your application runs closest to where your users are. Fly.io’s anycast networking routes each request to the nearest healthy instance. Adding a region is a single command: fly scale count 1 --region nrt adds an instance in Tokyo.
Persistent Storage
Fly Volumes provide persistent NVMe storage attached to your VMs. Unlike ephemeral containers, your data persists across deployments. This enables running stateful workloads like databases directly on Fly.io without a managed database service.
Fly Postgres
Run Postgres on Fly.io’s infrastructure with automatic replication to multiple regions. The primary handles writes; read replicas in other regions handle local reads. This gives your application fast database reads worldwide while maintaining a single primary for consistency.
GPU Machines
Fly.io offers GPU-equipped machines for AI/ML workloads. Run inference close to your users with the same deployment model as your web application. No separate GPU cloud provider, no cross-account networking.
Who Is This For?
- Applications with global users that need low latency worldwide
- Real-time applications (multiplayer games, collaborative tools, live streaming)
- Edge computing workloads that need to run close to users
- Developers who want Heroku simplicity with multi-region deployment
Pros
- 30+ regions with anycast routing
- VM-level isolation (Firecracker)
- Persistent storage (NVMe volumes)
- Built-in Postgres with global replication
- GPU machines available
- Free tier (3 shared VMs, 160 GB bandwidth)
Cons
- Multi-region adds complexity (data replication, consistency)
- Pricing can be unpredictable at scale
- CLI-centric (dashboard is secondary)
- Managed Postgres is self-managed (you run it, Fly hosts it)
- Debugging distributed apps across regions is harder
Verdict
Fly.io solves the right problem: getting your application physically close to your users. CDNs cache static assets at the edge, but your API server still runs in us-east-1. Fly.io puts the entire application at the edge, including compute and data. For applications where latency matters — and it almost always matters more than developers think — this architectural advantage is significant.
The complexity of multi-region deployment is real, and Fly.io doesn’t hide it. You need to think about data replication, consistency models, and which regions to deploy to. But Fly.io gives you the primitives to solve these problems, and the result is an application that feels fast everywhere in the world.
