What Is Railway?

Railway is a cloud platform that deploys applications from a Git repository with minimal configuration. Push code, Railway detects the language and framework, builds the application, and deploys it with a public URL. It also provides managed databases (Postgres, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB), persistent volumes, and cron jobs. The experience is designed to feel like Heroku at its best: simple to start, capable enough to grow into.

Railway is framework-agnostic and language-agnostic. It supports Node.js, Python, Go, Rust, Ruby, PHP, Java, .NET, Elixir, and any Docker container. The buildpack detection handles most projects without configuration; for everything else, a Dockerfile works.

Key Features

One-Click Deploy

Connect a GitHub repository, select a branch, and Railway deploys your application. No Dockerfile, no YAML, no build commands. Railway detects the framework (Next.js, Django, Express, Rails) and configures the build automatically. Environment variables, domain configuration, and scaling are managed from the dashboard.

Managed Databases

Add Postgres, MySQL, Redis, or MongoDB to your project with a single click. The database connection string is automatically injected into your application’s environment. Backups, scaling, and failover are managed by Railway. No separate database provisioning or connection management.

Private Networking

Services within a Railway project communicate over a private network. Your API server connects to your database over a private address, not the public internet. This reduces latency and eliminates the need to configure firewall rules between services.

Preview Environments

Every pull request gets its own deployment with its own database and its own URL. Review changes in an isolated environment that mirrors production. When the PR is merged, the preview environment is cleaned up automatically.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Deploy from Git push (zero configuration for most projects)
  • Managed databases included (Postgres, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB)
  • Private networking between services
  • Preview environments for every PR
  • Usage-based pricing (pay for what you use)
  • Framework-agnostic (supports everything)

Cons

  • Usage costs can exceed fixed-price alternatives at scale
  • No free tier anymore (Hobby plan is $5/month minimum)
  • Single region (US-West) for most plans
  • No built-in CDN
  • Limited compute options (no GPU, no large instances)

Verdict

Railway fills the void that Heroku left when it removed its free tier and stopped innovating. The deployment experience is what Heroku should have become: fast, modern, framework-agnostic, with managed databases, private networking, and preview environments included. For developers who want to deploy and move on, Railway is the most frictionless option available.

The trade-off is cost at scale. Usage-based pricing works in your favor when traffic is low but can exceed the cost of a fixed-price VPS when traffic is high. Railway is optimized for developer experience, not cost-per-compute-hour, and at high scale you’ll likely graduate to managing your own infrastructure.
