Overview
Obsidian is a local-first markdown knowledge base with powerful linking, plugins, and graph views for personal or team note systems.
Pros
- Local-first storage with plain Markdown files
- Powerful backlinks, graph view, and knowledge linking
- Extensible with community plugins and themes
- Fast, lightweight desktop experience
- Strong personal knowledge management features
Cons
- Mobile experience is less polished than desktop
- Team collaboration requires paid add-ons
- Plugin setup can become complex
- Advanced workflows have a learning curve
Verdict
Obsidian excels at building a connected, local-first knowledge base using Markdown. It is ideal for researchers, writers, and developers who want deep control over their notes. The main trade-off is that collaboration and mobile use are not as seamless as cloud-first tools.
