What Is Turborepo?

Turborepo is a high-performance build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos. It understands the dependency graph between your packages, runs tasks in parallel where possible, and caches results so that work that has already been done is never repeated.

The core value proposition: if you change a utility package, Turborepo rebuilds only the packages that depend on it. If a teammate already built the same code with the same inputs, remote caching lets you download their result instead of rebuilding locally. The build system does less work, so builds finish faster.

Key Features

Incremental Builds

Turborepo hashes the inputs to each task (source files, dependencies, environment variables) and caches the outputs. When inputs haven’t changed, the cached output is used. This means turbo run build on a large monorepo often finishes in seconds because most packages are cached from previous runs.

Remote Caching

Share build caches across your team and CI. When one developer builds a package, the cache artifact is uploaded. When another developer or CI pipeline needs the same build, it downloads the cached result instead of rebuilding. This is the feature that makes the biggest difference in team productivity.

Parallel Execution

Turborepo analyzes the dependency graph and runs independent tasks in parallel. If packages A and B don’t depend on each other, their builds run simultaneously. The task graph is visualized with turbo run build --graph, so you can see exactly what runs in parallel and what waits.

Pipeline Configuration

Define task dependencies in turbo.json. Say that build depends on the build of dependencies, that test depends on build, and that lint has no dependencies. Turborepo handles the execution order, parallelism, and caching for all of them.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Incremental builds skip unchanged work
  • Remote caching shares results across team and CI
  • Parallel execution uses all available cores
  • Simple configuration (turbo.json)
  • Works with npm, yarn, pnpm workspaces
  • Written in Rust (fast)

Cons

  • Remote caching is Vercel-hosted (or self-host)
  • Only for JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystems
  • Competes with Nx (which has more features)
  • Small repos don’t benefit much
  • Cache invalidation bugs can cause stale builds

Verdict

Turborepo makes monorepo builds fast by doing less work. The combination of incremental builds, remote caching, and parallel execution means that most builds skip most of the work. For teams with monorepos, the time savings are immediate and compound as the repo grows.

The tool is simple by design: a turbo.json file, a few task definitions, and you’re running. This is both its strength and limitation compared to Nx, which offers more features but also more complexity. For most JavaScript/TypeScript monorepos, Turborepo’s simplicity is the right trade-off.
