What Is Resend?
Resend is a transactional email API built for developers. Instead of configuring SMTP servers or wrestling with email service providers that were designed for marketers, you call an API and the email is sent. The SDK is clean, the dashboard shows delivery status, and you can use React components to build email templates.
The key innovation is React Email: an open-source library (also from the Resend team) that lets you build email templates with React components. You write <Button>, <Section>, <Heading> and Resend renders them as email-compatible HTML. No more inline styles and nested tables.
Key Features
Simple API
Send an email with one API call. The SDK supports TypeScript, Python, Ruby, Go, PHP, and others. The minimal example is five lines: import the SDK, create a client with your API key, and call resend.emails.send() with from, to, subject, and html. That’s it.
React Email Templates
Build email templates with React components instead of HTML tables. Preview them in the browser during development. The components handle email client compatibility — they render as the nested tables and inline styles that email clients require, but you write modern JSX.
Delivery Tracking
The dashboard shows delivery status for every email: sent, delivered, opened, clicked, bounced. Webhooks notify your backend of delivery events. You can see exactly which emails landed and which bounced, without guessing.
Domain Verification
Resend handles SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configuration. Add a DNS record, verify the domain, and your emails go out with proper authentication. The dashboard shows verification status and warns about missing records.
Who Is This For?
- Developers who need to send transactional emails (welcome emails, receipts, notifications)
- Teams using React who want to build email templates with the same components they use for UI
- Anyone frustrated by SendGrid, Mailgun, or SES and wants a cleaner developer experience
Pros
- Clean, minimal API
- React Email templates (JSX for emails)
- Delivery tracking and webhooks
- Free tier for getting started (100/day)
- SDKs in every major language
- Modern dashboard and documentation
Cons
- No marketing email features (no campaigns, lists, segmentation)
- Free tier is small (100/day)
- Newer than SendGrid/Mailgun (less track record)
- React Email requires React knowledge
- No SMTP relay (API only)
Verdict
Resend is what happens when a developer builds an email API for developers. The API is clean, the documentation is excellent, and React Email is a genuine improvement over the HTML-table-with-inline-styles nightmare that email templates have been for decades.
If you need transactional email (password resets, order confirmations, notifications), Resend is the best developer experience available. If you need marketing email (campaigns, lists, analytics), look at tools built for that purpose instead.
