What Is NotchMind?

NotchMind turns the MacBook notch — the black cutout around the front camera — into a functional workspace. Instead of dead space at the top of your screen, NotchMind gives you music controls, a file drop shelf, timers, quick notes, and more, all accessible by hovering over or clicking the notch area.

Apple introduced the notch with the 2021 MacBook Pro and it has been the subject of love-it-or-hate-it opinions ever since. NotchMind takes the “make it useful” approach: since the notch is there anyway, why not make it do something?

Key Features

Music Controls

Hover over the notch to see now-playing information and playback controls. Works with Apple Music, Spotify, and other media apps. The controls are always one hover away, without opening the music app or using keyboard shortcuts.

File Shelf

Drag a file to the notch and it stays there as a temporary shelf. When you need it later — to drop into an email, a chat, or another app — grab it from the notch. Useful for the common “I need to move this file but I’m not done with the current window” workflow.

Timers and Pomodoro

Set a timer from the notch. A visual countdown appears in the notch area, visible while you work. Includes Pomodoro presets for focused work sessions.

Quick Notes

Click the notch to jot a quick note without opening Notes or any other app. The note persists until you dismiss it. Designed for the moments when you need to capture a thought immediately.

Calendar Glance

See your next meeting or event at a glance. The notch area shows upcoming calendar events, so you know what’s next without checking your calendar app.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Turns dead screen space into functional workspace
  • File shelf is a genuinely useful interaction
  • Music controls always one hover away
  • Timer visible while working
  • One-time purchase (no subscription)
  • Lightweight and native

Cons

  • Only works on MacBooks with notch (2021+)
  • Competes with macOS Dynamic Island on newer models
  • Feature set is narrow by design
  • Notch hover can trigger accidentally
  • No iOS/iPad companion

Verdict

NotchMind is a well-executed utility that turns a design constraint into a feature. The file shelf alone is worth the price — dragging a file to the notch and picking it up later in a different context is faster than the alternatives (Finder sidebar, desktop, Stage Manager shelf).

The main risk is platform: Apple’s Dynamic Island is moving from iPhone to Mac, and when it arrives, it may absorb NotchMind’s functionality natively. Until then, NotchMind fills the gap well.
