What Is GitBot?
GitBot turns a job you keep giving your coding agent into a reusable bot. Write the instructions once, set what files it may touch, and run it across any repository. It uses the agent CLIs and logins you already have — Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode.
The problem it solves: developers have tasks they repeatedly delegate to AI coding agents. Code review checklists, test scaffolding, migration scripts, changelog generation. Each time you describe the task from scratch. GitBot captures the task as a bot with persistent instructions, permissions, and thread history.
Key Features
Agent-Agnostic Bots
Each bot can use Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode as its engine. You pick the agent per bot based on what it’s best at. A code review bot might use Claude Code; a test generation bot might use Codex. The bot definition is separate from the agent runtime.
Permission Controls
Each bot specifies what it may touch: which files, which directories, read-only or read-write. This prevents a bot from modifying files outside its scope — important when running bots automatically or across repositories you don’t want to babysit.
Persistent Threads
Bots maintain thread history across runs. A code review bot remembers what it flagged last time. A migration bot knows which files it already processed. Persistence means bots get smarter about your codebase over time.
Bot Library
Install bots other developers have made from the GitBot Library, or share yours. The library turns individual automation into community knowledge — someone else’s bot for generating API docs might save you hours of setup.
Who Is This For?
- Developers who repeatedly delegate the same tasks to AI coding agents
- Teams standardizing agent-driven workflows across repositories
- Open-source maintainers who want automated triage, review, or documentation
- Anyone using Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode who wants reusable automation
Pros
- Open source, no account, no telemetry
- Agent-agnostic (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode)
- Permission controls per bot
- Persistent threads across runs
- Community bot library
- Uses agent logins you already have
Cons
- Requires an existing coding agent subscription
- Bot authoring has a learning curve
- Young project (launched October 2026)
- Library is small, community is just starting
- Local-only — no hosted/cloud mode
Verdict
GitBot addresses the gap between ad hoc agent prompting and reliable automation. If you find yourself giving Claude Code the same instructions every week, GitBot captures those instructions as a bot that runs consistently with defined permissions. The persistent thread model means bots accumulate context, which is particularly valuable for review and triage workflows.
The open-source, no-telemetry approach is the right trust model for a tool that runs in your repositories. And the bot library creates a network effect: as more developers share bots, the value of the ecosystem grows. For developers already using AI coding agents, GitBot is a natural next step.
