What Is Windsurf?

Windsurf is an AI-powered IDE built by Codeium (the company behind the Codeium autocomplete extension). It combines a code editor with an AI agent called Cascade that can make multi-file changes, run terminal commands, and iterate on code autonomously. The key concept is Flows — Windsurf tracks your actions and AI actions together, so the agent understands what you’ve been doing and can continue your work.

Where Cursor focuses on codebase-aware completions and chat, Windsurf focuses on agentic workflows: give Cascade a task, and it plans steps, edits files, runs tests, and iterates until the task is complete. You review and accept the changes.

Key Features

Cascade Agent

The AI agent that plans and executes multi-step tasks. Describe a feature, bug fix, or refactor, and Cascade breaks it into steps: reads relevant files, edits code, creates new files, runs commands, and checks results. You see each step and can intervene or redirect.

Flows

Windsurf tracks your coding session as a Flow: your edits, terminal commands, and file navigation are all context for the AI. When you ask Cascade for help, it knows what you’ve been working on. This context awareness means less prompting and more relevant suggestions.

Multi-File Edits

Cascade edits multiple files in a single operation. Add a component, update imports, modify the router, and adjust the test — all from one prompt. The changes appear as a diff you can review file by file before accepting.

Inline Autocomplete

Codeium’s autocomplete engine provides fast, context-aware code completions. Tab to accept, or keep typing. The completions are powered by Codeium’s own models, optimized for speed.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Cascade agent for autonomous multi-step tasks
  • Flows track your session for context
  • Multi-file edits with diff preview
  • Fast autocomplete (Codeium engine)
  • Competitive pricing ($15/mo Pro)
  • VS Code compatible extensions

Cons

  • Younger product than Cursor
  • Agent can make incorrect multi-file changes
  • Model selection more limited than Cursor
  • Extension compatibility not 100%
  • Community and ecosystem smaller

Verdict

Windsurf’s Cascade agent is the most capable in-editor AI agent available. Where Cursor excels at completions and inline edits, Windsurf excels at autonomous multi-file changes: describe what you want, and Cascade plans and executes the implementation across your codebase.

The tradeoff is maturity. Cursor has been the AI editor leader for longer and has a larger community. Windsurf’s agent model is more ambitious — and when it works, it’s faster than any other approach. When it doesn’t, you’re reviewing and fixing multi-file changes that went in the wrong direction. Try both free tiers and see which workflow fits your style.
