What Is Wasp?
Wasp is a full-stack web framework that generates React + Node.js + Prisma applications from a declarative configuration file. You define your data model, routes, authentication method, and background jobs in a .wasp file, write your React components and Node.js operations in TypeScript, and Wasp generates the glue code: API routes, database client, auth middleware, and deployment configuration.
The goal is to eliminate the boilerplate that every full-stack web app requires. Every SaaS needs authentication, CRUD operations, email sending, background jobs, and deployment. Wasp provides all of these as framework features, so you write the business logic and Wasp handles the infrastructure.
Key Features
Declarative Configuration
The .wasp file declares your app’s structure: routes, pages, authentication providers, entities (database models), queries, and actions. This is not a template or scaffold — it’s a live configuration that Wasp continuously generates from. Change the config, and the generated code updates.
Built-in Authentication
Add auth: { ... } to your Wasp file and get email/password, Google, GitHub, or any social login. No passport.js setup, no session management, no password hashing implementation. The auth system includes email verification, password reset, and session handling.
Type-Safe Full Stack
Queries and actions defined in the Wasp file generate TypeScript types for both frontend and backend. When you change a database entity, the types propagate to your React components and Node.js operations. No manual type synchronization between client and server.
One-Command Deploy
wasp deploy fly deploys your app to Fly.io with a single command. Wasp generates the Dockerfile, configures the database, and handles environment variables. No Dockerfile to write, no CI/CD pipeline to configure for the initial deployment.
Who Is This For?
- Solo developers and small teams building SaaS products who want to ship fast
- Hackathon participants who need a full-stack app in hours, not days
- Developers familiar with React and Node.js who want a framework that handles the full stack
- Anyone tired of configuring auth, email, background jobs, and deployment for every new project
Pros
- Eliminates full-stack boilerplate (auth, CRUD, email, jobs)
- Declarative config generates working code
- Type-safe across frontend and backend
- One-command deployment
- Open source (no vendor lock-in)
- Uses familiar tools (React, Node.js, Prisma)
Cons
- Opinionated stack (React + Node.js + Prisma only)
- Custom DSL (.wasp file) has a learning curve
- Generated code can be hard to debug
- Smaller ecosystem than Next.js or Rails
- Not suitable for non-standard architectures
Verdict
Wasp is the fastest path to a working SaaS application for developers who already know React and Node.js. The declarative approach means you describe what you want (auth with Google, a database entity, a background job) and Wasp generates the implementation. For standard web applications, this eliminates days of setup work.
The trade-off is the same as any opinionated framework: it’s fast when your application fits the framework’s model, and fighting the framework when it doesn’t. If your app is a standard SaaS with auth, CRUD, and background jobs, Wasp will save you significant time. If your architecture is non-standard, you’ll spend that time working around Wasp’s assumptions instead.
