What Is Val Town?

Val Town is a social programming environment where you write small TypeScript functions (“vals”) in the browser and they instantly become live APIs, cron jobs, or email handlers. Think of it as GitHub Gists that run — with HTTP endpoints, scheduled execution, persistent storage, and the ability to import other people’s vals.

The social dimension is what makes Val Town different from other serverless platforms. Every val is public by default (private vals exist on paid plans). You can browse what others have built, fork their vals, and import their code into your own. The result is a library of reusable serverless functions that grows organically.

Key Features

Instant HTTP Endpoints

Write a function that handles an HTTP request, and Val Town gives it a URL immediately. No deploy step, no configuration, no domain setup. The function runs on Deno, so you get TypeScript, top-level await, and Web API compatibility out of the box.

Cron Scheduling

Mark a val as a cron job and it runs on schedule. “Check this API every hour and email me if the price drops” is a 10-line val. The cron infrastructure is handled by Val Town — no server to keep running, no crontab to manage.

Email Handling

Each val can receive emails at a generated address. Forward emails to a val, and it can parse the content, extract data, and take action. Use cases include receipt parsing, support ticket routing, and newsletter archiving.

Persistent Storage

Val Town provides a key-value store (@std/blob) and a SQLite database (@std/sqlite) for persistent data. Your cron job can store state between runs. Your API can maintain a database. No external database setup required.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Instant deployment: write code, get a URL
  • Social coding: browse, fork, and import others’ work
  • Built-in cron, email handling, and storage
  • Deno runtime (TypeScript, Web APIs, npm compatibility)
  • Free tier is generous for personal use
  • No infrastructure to manage

Cons

  • Public by default (sensitive code needs paid plan)
  • Deno-only (no Python, Go, or other runtimes)
  • Not suitable for production applications with SLAs
  • Limited compute resources per execution
  • Lock-in: vals don’t run outside Val Town easily

Verdict

Val Town is the fastest path from “I have an idea for a small utility” to “it’s running in the cloud with a URL.” The zero-deploy workflow removes all the friction between writing code and having it live. For personal automation, quick prototypes, and small internal tools, nothing else gets you from zero to running this fast.

The social dimension is genuinely novel. Browsing other people’s vals is like browsing a library of working examples. When you need to call the OpenAI API, parse an RSS feed, or send a Slack notification, there’s likely a val you can fork and modify instead of starting from scratch.
