What Is Umami?

Umami is a self-hosted, open-source web analytics platform. Like Plausible, it provides privacy-friendly analytics without cookies or personal data collection. Unlike Plausible, Umami is MIT-licensed (not AGPLv3), making it freely embeddable in commercial products.

Umami focuses on simplicity and self-hosting. Deploy it on Vercel, Railway, Docker, or any Node.js host. Connect your PostgreSQL or MySQL database, add the tracking script to your site, and you have a privacy-compliant analytics dashboard running on your own infrastructure.

Key Features

One-Click Deploy

Deploy to Vercel, Railway, or Docker with minimal configuration. The project is a standard Next.js app — if you can deploy a Next.js project, you can deploy Umami. This lowers the self-hosting barrier from “set up a server” to “click a button on Vercel.”

Real-Time Dashboard

See visitors, pageviews, bounce rate, and visit duration in real time. The dashboard updates as traffic arrives. Filter by date range, URL, referrer, country, device, browser, and OS. All on one page, no report builder needed.

Custom Events

Track custom events (button clicks, form submissions, feature usage) alongside pageviews. The event tracking API is simple: call umami.track('event-name') from your frontend. Events appear in the dashboard alongside traffic data.

Multi-Site Support

Track multiple websites from one Umami instance. Each site gets its own dashboard and tracking code. For agencies or developers managing multiple sites, one Umami deployment covers all of them.

Teams and Sharing

Create team workspaces, invite members, and share dashboards. Individual dashboards can be made public with a shareable link. For clients or stakeholders who need traffic visibility without login access.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • MIT license (no commercial restrictions)
  • One-click deploy to Vercel/Railway
  • Multi-site support from one instance
  • Custom event tracking
  • Real-time dashboard
  • Free when self-hosted

Cons

  • No advanced analytics (funnels, A/B tests)
  • Self-hosting requires database maintenance
  • Smaller community than Plausible
  • No built-in goal conversion tracking
  • Limited integrations

Verdict

Umami is the best free, self-hosted web analytics option. The MIT license means you can use it in commercial products without restrictions, and the one-click Vercel deploy makes self-hosting accessible to developers who don’t want to manage servers.

Compared to Plausible, Umami is more developer-friendly (MIT vs. AGPLv3, easier self-hosting) but less polished in the hosted experience. If you want a managed service with zero maintenance, Plausible Cloud is better. If you want free, self-hosted, MIT-licensed analytics you fully control, Umami is the right choice.
