What Is Refine?

Refine is a React meta-framework for building data-intensive applications. It handles the repeating patterns in CRUD apps — data fetching, state management, routing, authentication, access control — so you write the business logic and UI components without the boilerplate.

The key difference from Retool and Appsmith: Refine is code-first, not drag-and-drop. You write React components using Refine’s hooks and data providers. The output is a standard React application that you own, deploy anywhere, and customize without constraints. No vendor lock-in, no platform limitations.

Key Features

Data Provider Architecture

Refine abstracts data operations (list, create, read, update, delete) behind a “data provider” interface. Out-of-the-box providers exist for REST APIs, GraphQL, Supabase, Strapi, Hasura, NestJS, Appwrite, and others. Switch backends by changing the provider — your components don’t change.

UI Framework Agnostic

Refine works with Ant Design, Material UI, Chakra UI, Mantine, or headless (no UI library). This means you can match your internal tool’s look to your company’s design system instead of being locked into one component library.

Built-In Auth and Access Control

Authentication and authorization are first-class concerns. Define who can access which resources and actions, and Refine enforces it across routes, components, and data operations. The auth provider is pluggable — use your existing auth system.

Code-First, Not Low-Code

You write TypeScript and React. The result is a standard React application with full source control, automated testing, CI/CD, and no platform dependency. This is the right choice for engineering teams that want the speed benefits of a framework without the lock-in of a platform.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • MIT open source, no vendor lock-in
  • Code-first with React hooks
  • Works with any UI library or headless
  • Data provider abstraction (swap backends easily)
  • Built-in auth and access control
  • Standard React app output

Cons

  • Requires React/TypeScript knowledge
  • Not visual/drag-and-drop (not for non-developers)
  • Steeper learning curve than Retool/Appsmith
  • Fewer ready-made components than platform tools
  • Documentation can be overwhelming

Verdict

Refine occupies a different niche than Retool and Appsmith: it’s for engineering teams that want to build internal tools as standard React applications, not as platform-locked drag-and-drop configurations. The data provider architecture, UI framework flexibility, and built-in auth make it faster than starting from scratch, while the code-first approach means no vendor lock-in and full customization.

Choose Retool/Appsmith if speed-to-deploy matters more than flexibility. Choose Refine if your team writes React, wants source control and CI/CD, and needs internal tools that match your existing design system and infrastructure.
