What Is PostHog?
PostHog is an open-source product analytics platform that replaces five separate tools: analytics (Mixpanel/Amplitude), feature flags (LaunchDarkly), session recording (FullStory/Hotjar), A/B testing (Optimizely), and surveys (Typeform). One SDK, one dashboard, one vendor.
The all-in-one approach means your analytics events, feature flag evaluations, session recordings, and A/B test results are all connected. You can watch a session recording of a user who hit a specific event, filter analytics by feature flag variant, or see which A/B test variant produces more conversions. This cross-referencing is what separate tools can’t do.
Key Features
Product Analytics
Track events, build funnels, analyze retention, and create dashboards. PostHog auto-captures clicks, pageviews, and form submissions without code. Custom events are tracked with a simple API call. The SQL-based query engine (HogQL) lets you run arbitrary queries on your event data.
Feature Flags
Toggle features per user, per group, or per percentage rollout. Feature flags evaluate locally (no network request on every check), and they integrate with analytics so you can measure the impact of each flag. Multivariate flags support A/B/n testing.
Session Recording
Watch what users do on your site. Session recordings capture DOM changes, network requests, and console logs. Filter recordings by event, error, or user property. Click on an analytics event and watch the session where it happened.
A/B Testing
Run experiments with statistical rigor. Define a hypothesis, set a target metric, split traffic, and PostHog handles the statistics. Results include confidence intervals, sample size calculations, and significance testing.
Who Is This For?
- Product teams that want analytics, feature flags, and session recording in one platform
- Startups that want to avoid paying for 5 separate tools
- Privacy-conscious teams that want to self-host their analytics
- Engineers who want a developer-friendly analytics platform with SQL access
Pros
- All-in-one (analytics + flags + recordings + A/B + surveys)
- Open source and self-hostable
- Generous free tier (1M events/mo)
- Cross-referencing between features
- HogQL for custom SQL queries
- Auto-capture reduces instrumentation work
Cons
- Jack of all trades (each feature less deep than specialist tools)
- Self-hosting requires significant ClickHouse infrastructure
- UI can feel overwhelming (many features in one dashboard)
- Mobile SDK less mature than web
- Usage-based pricing can surprise
Verdict
PostHog is the best value in product analytics. The free tier gives you 1M events, session recording, feature flags, and A/B testing — capabilities that would cost thousands per month from separate vendors. The all-in-one model means your data is connected: watch the session recording of a user who dropped off in your funnel, filtered by feature flag variant.
The trade-off is depth: each individual feature is good but not best-in-class. If you need extremely sophisticated A/B testing, Optimizely is deeper. If you need enterprise feature flag governance, LaunchDarkly is deeper. But for most teams, PostHog’s 80% of each feature at 100% integration is the better trade-off than 100% of each feature in separate tools that don’t talk to each other.
