Obsidian is a knowledge management and note-taking app built around plain Markdown files and linked notes. It helps users organize ideas, research, projects, and personal knowledge in a flexible local-first environment. With plugins and customization options, it can function as a lightweight writing tool, second brain, or full project workspace.
Obsidian offers a free Personal License for individuals. Commercial licenses are available for business use, while additional services such as Obsidian Sync and Obsidian Publish are offered as paid subscriptions with annual billing options. Core note-taking remains available without forced cloud storage.
Proprietary
Obsidian is a strong choice for people who want control over their notes, long-term file portability, and deep customization. Its greatest strengths are local-first storage, linked note organization, and extensibility through plugins. The main trade-off is that it can require more setup than simpler note apps, especially for users who want polished features immediately. It is best suited for researchers, writers, developers, students, and knowledge workers who want a durable and flexible personal knowledge system.
