What Is Nginx?
Nginx (pronounced “engine-x”) is a high-performance web server and reverse proxy. It serves static files, proxies requests to application servers, load balances across backends, terminates TLS, and caches responses. Nginx powers a significant portion of the internet’s websites, including some of the highest-traffic sites in the world.
Nginx’s event-driven, asynchronous architecture handles tens of thousands of concurrent connections with minimal memory. Where Apache creates a process or thread per connection, Nginx uses a single-threaded event loop that multiplexes connections. This is why Nginx became the default choice for high-traffic deployments.
Key Features
Reverse Proxy
Nginx sits in front of your application servers and routes requests. It handles TLS termination, adds headers, rewrites URLs, and distributes load. Your application sees clean HTTP requests; Nginx handles the protocol complexity.
Load Balancing
Round-robin, least connections, IP hash, and weighted distribution across backends. Health checks remove failed servers from the pool. Nginx Plus adds active health checks and session persistence.
Static File Serving
Nginx serves static files (HTML, CSS, JS, images) extremely efficiently. The sendfile system call bypasses userspace copying, and the event-driven architecture means serving static files doesn’t block other requests.
TLS Termination
Terminate TLS at Nginx and forward plain HTTP to your backends. Configure certificates, enable HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, set security headers, and manage OCSP stapling. Nginx handles the crypto work so your application doesn’t.
Who Is This For?
- Any production web application that needs a reverse proxy
- High-traffic sites that need efficient static file serving
- Teams deploying microservices that need load balancing
- DevOps teams managing web infrastructure
Pros
- Handles massive concurrency with low memory
- Battle-tested at the largest scale
- Excellent reverse proxy and load balancer
- HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 support
- Huge community and documentation
- Nginx OSS is free and proven
Cons
- Configuration syntax has a learning curve
- Dynamic config changes require reload
- No automatic HTTPS (unlike Caddy)
- Lua/njs scripting is complex for dynamic routing
- Advanced features require Nginx Plus (paid)
Verdict
Nginx is the default web server/reverse proxy for production deployments. The event-driven architecture handles traffic spikes gracefully, the configuration is well-documented (if verbose), and the ecosystem includes every integration you might need.
The main alternative is Caddy, which offers automatic HTTPS and simpler configuration. For teams that value operational simplicity and automatic certificate management, Caddy is worth evaluating. For teams that need fine-grained control, extensive community modules, and battle-tested stability at massive scale, Nginx remains the standard.
