What Is Linear?

Linear is a project management tool built for software development teams. It handles issues, sprints, roadmaps, and project tracking with a focus on speed and developer experience. Every interaction is keyboard-accessible, the UI updates optimistically (no waiting for the server), and the data model maps to how software teams actually work.

Linear is the anti-Jira. Where Jira is infinitely configurable (and infinitely slow), Linear makes opinionated decisions about workflow: issues have a fixed set of statuses, sprints are called cycles, and the interface is fast because it syncs data locally and renders without network round trips.

Key Features

Speed

Linear is fast. Not “fast for a web app” but actually fast — every click, every transition, every list render feels immediate. The architecture syncs data to the client and renders locally, so the UI never waits for the network. This sounds like a small thing, but speed compounds: a tool you use hundreds of times a day needs to be fast or it drains your attention.

Keyboard-First

Every action has a keyboard shortcut. Hit C to create an issue, S to set status, P to set priority. The command palette (Cmd+K) searches everything: issues, projects, members, settings. You can triage an entire sprint without touching the mouse.

GitHub Integration

Link issues to PRs. When a PR merges, the issue auto-transitions to Done. Branch names auto-link to issues. This is the integration Jira has spent years trying to get right, and Linear nails it because they designed the data model around it.

Roadmaps and Projects

Group issues into projects, group projects into roadmaps. Track progress visually. The hierarchy is simple: Workspace > Team > Project > Issue. No custom fields, no workflow engines, no 47 status options. The constraints are the feature.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Genuinely fast (local-first architecture)
  • Keyboard-first with full shortcuts
  • Excellent GitHub/GitLab integration
  • Opinionated but well-designed workflow
  • Beautiful, clean UI
  • Free tier for small teams

Cons

  • Limited customization (by design)
  • Not suitable for non-engineering teams
  • No time tracking built in
  • Less flexible than Jira for enterprise workflows
  • Pricing scales with team size

Verdict

Linear is what project management should feel like. The speed, keyboard shortcuts, and GitHub integration create a workflow where tracking work doesn’t feel like overhead. For software teams that want to spend less time in their project tracker and more time building, Linear is the best option available.

The limitation is intentional: Linear doesn’t try to be everything for everyone. If you need Jira’s infinite configurability, custom workflows, or enterprise compliance features, Linear won’t work. But if you’re a software team that wants a fast, opinionated tracker, Linear is the clear choice.
