What Is Hono?

Hono (Japanese for “flame”) is a small, ultrafast web framework that runs everywhere: Cloudflare Workers, Deno, Bun, AWS Lambda, Node.js, Fastly, Vercel, and more. It’s TypeScript-first, has zero dependencies, and uses the Web Standards API (Request/Response) as its foundation.

Think of Hono as Express.js rebuilt for the modern JavaScript ecosystem. Where Express was designed for Node.js, Hono is designed for any JavaScript runtime. The same code deploys to a Cloudflare Worker, a Deno server, or a Bun process without modification.

Key Features

Multi-Runtime

Write your API once and deploy it to any runtime. Hono uses the Web Standards Request and Response objects, which every modern runtime supports. Switch from Cloudflare Workers to Deno to Bun by changing one line in your config. The application code stays the same.

Ultrafast Routing

Hono’s router uses a RegExpRouter that compiles route patterns into a single regular expression for matching. Route resolution is O(1) regardless of how many routes you have. In benchmarks, Hono consistently matches or beats other lightweight frameworks.

TypeScript-First

Routes, middleware, and handlers are fully typed. The c.req.query() and c.req.param() methods return typed values. Middleware chains preserve types through the handler pipeline. RPC mode generates end-to-end typed API clients, similar to tRPC.

Built-In Middleware

Hono ships with middleware for common needs: CORS, CSRF protection, JWT authentication, rate limiting, caching, ETag, compression, and more. Each middleware is a separate import, so you only pay for what you use. The middleware API is clean: a function that takes a context and calls next().

JSX and HTML Streaming

Hono includes a JSX runtime for server-side rendering. Build HTML responses with JSX components and stream them to the client. This isn’t React — it’s a lightweight JSX implementation that renders to HTML strings. Perfect for building server-rendered pages without a frontend framework.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Runs on any JavaScript runtime
  • Ultrafast routing (O(1) matching)
  • Zero dependencies, tiny bundle
  • TypeScript-first with end-to-end types
  • Rich built-in middleware
  • Active development and growing community

Cons

  • Not a full-stack framework (no frontend routing)
  • Smaller ecosystem than Express
  • JSX runtime is basic compared to React
  • Less documentation than mature frameworks
  • Rapid iteration can mean breaking changes

Verdict

Hono is the best web framework for edge and multi-runtime deployments. The combination of Web Standards foundation, ultrafast routing, TypeScript-first design, and zero dependencies makes it the natural choice for APIs and services that need to run on Cloudflare Workers, Deno, or Bun.

The comparison with Express is instructive: Express is the default for Node.js, but it’s tied to Node.js and carries 15 years of design decisions. Hono starts fresh with modern JavaScript standards and delivers a cleaner, faster, more portable framework. For new API projects, Hono is the framework to reach for.
