What Is GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant that provides code completions, chat, and agent mode in your editor. It works in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, and Xcode. Copilot was the first mainstream AI coding tool (launched 2022), and it remains the most widely used with over a million paying users.
Copilot is deeply integrated with GitHub. It knows your repository, your pull requests, your issues, and your team’s code. Copilot Chat can reference issues, explain pull request diffs, and generate code that follows your project’s conventions.
Key Features
Code Completions
Inline code suggestions as you type. Copilot completes the current line or generates entire functions based on context. Tab to accept, or cycle through alternatives. The completions cover every major programming language and framework.
Copilot Chat
AI chat in your editor sidebar. Ask questions, explain code, generate tests, fix bugs, or refactor. Chat is context-aware: it sees your current file, selected code, and open tabs. With @workspace, it searches your entire repository.
Agent Mode
Copilot Agent autonomously edits multiple files, runs terminal commands, and iterates on implementations. Describe a task, and the agent creates a plan, makes changes across files, and runs tests to verify. Agent mode is GitHub’s answer to Cursor’s composer and Windsurf’s Cascade.
GitHub Integration
Copilot works across GitHub: review pull requests, generate commit messages, write issue descriptions, and explain code in the web interface. For teams on GitHub, the integration is seamless — Copilot is just another GitHub feature.
Who Is This For?
- Any developer using VS Code or JetBrains
- Teams on GitHub who want integrated AI
- Developers who want AI without switching editors
- Enterprise teams with security and compliance requirements
Pros
- Works in your existing editor (VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim)
- Deep GitHub integration (PRs, issues, web)
- Agent mode for multi-file changes
- Free tier available
- Enterprise features (IP indemnity, policy controls)
- Most widely adopted AI coding tool
Cons
- Less codebase-aware than Cursor
- Agent mode newer and less polished
- $10/mo for basic individual use
- Completions can be repetitive
- JetBrains integration lags VS Code
Verdict
GitHub Copilot is the safe choice for AI-assisted coding. It works in your existing editor, integrates with GitHub, and provides solid completions and chat. For teams already on GitHub, the integration is compelling: Copilot across the editor, pull requests, and issues creates a unified AI experience.
The competitive landscape has shifted, though. Cursor offers better codebase awareness and inline editing. Windsurf offers a more capable agent. Copilot’s advantages are integration (stays in your editor, works with GitHub) and adoption (your team may already have it). Try the free tier, and compare with Cursor’s free tier to decide.
