What Is Coolify?

Coolify is an open-source, self-hosted alternative to Heroku, Netlify, and Vercel. Install it on your own server (a $5 VPS is enough) and get git-push deploys, automatic SSL, managed databases, and a web dashboard — all running on infrastructure you control, at the cost of the server itself.

The value proposition is straightforward: instead of paying $7-50/month per service on a PaaS, you pay $5-20/month for a VPS and run everything on it. Coolify provides the management layer that makes this practical without being a sysadmin.

Key Features

One-Click Deployments

Connect a GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket repository. Push to a branch, and Coolify builds and deploys automatically. Supports Dockerfiles, Docker Compose, Nixpacks (auto-detected), and static sites. The build system detects your stack and handles the rest.

One-Click Databases

Deploy PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis, and others with one click. Automatic backups, accessible from your applications on the same server. No managed database markup — the database runs on your server at no additional cost.

Automatic SSL

Let’s Encrypt certificates are provisioned and renewed automatically. Point your domain at the server, and Coolify handles the SSL configuration. No manual certificate management.

Multi-Server Support

Manage multiple servers from one Coolify dashboard. Deploy different applications to different servers, manage domains and SSL across all of them. This scales Coolify from a single-server hobby setup to a multi-server production environment.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Free and open source (Apache 2.0)
  • Run on any VPS (total cost: just the server)
  • Git-push deploys with auto-detection
  • One-click databases included
  • Automatic SSL via Let’s Encrypt
  • Multi-server management

Cons

  • Requires server management knowledge
  • No auto-scaling (manual scaling)
  • Less reliable than managed PaaS
  • Server maintenance is your responsibility
  • Smaller community than Render/Vercel

Verdict

Coolify is the best self-hosted PaaS. It gives you Heroku-level deployment convenience on your own server, at the cost of the server alone. For developers running multiple small applications, the economics are compelling: a $20/month VPS replaces what would be $100-200/month on Render or Railway.

The trade-off is responsibility. When the server goes down, you fix it. When the database needs maintenance, you do it. If that trade-off is acceptable — and for many developers it is — Coolify is an excellent tool.
