What Is Coder?

Coder provisions cloud development environments on infrastructure you control. Define workspace templates using Terraform, and developers get fully configured environments on AWS, GCP, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, or bare metal. Unlike hosted solutions (Gitpod, GitHub Codespaces), Coder runs on your infrastructure — your cloud, your network, your security policies.

The self-hosted model is the differentiator. Regulated industries (finance, healthcare, government) often can’t use hosted cloud development platforms because code and data must stay on their own infrastructure. Coder provides the same cloud development experience without sending anything to a third party.

Key Features

Terraform Templates

Define workspace infrastructure in Terraform. Need a workspace with a GPU, 64GB RAM, and a PostgreSQL sidecar? Write it as a Terraform template. Developers provision from the template; Coder handles the lifecycle (create, stop, start, delete). Any infrastructure Terraform can manage, Coder can provision as a workspace.

Any Cloud, Any IDE

Workspaces run wherever you deploy them: AWS, GCP, Azure, on-premises Kubernetes, or bare metal. Developers connect through VS Code (remote SSH), JetBrains Gateway, or the built-in web terminal. The IDE connects to the workspace over a WireGuard tunnel — no port forwarding or VPN needed.

Template Governance

Platform teams define what developers can provision. Constrain machine sizes, enforce security policies, manage costs by auto-stopping idle workspaces. Developers get self-service provisioning; platform teams keep control over what gets created.

Cost Control

Auto-stop idle workspaces after configurable timeout. Usage tracking per team and user. Spot/preemptible instance support for non-persistent workspaces. For enterprises, the infrastructure cost of cloud development is the main concern — Coder provides the controls to manage it.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Self-hosted on your own infrastructure
  • Terraform-based templates (infinite flexibility)
  • Any cloud, any IDE, any machine size
  • Open source (AGPLv3)
  • Cost controls (auto-stop, usage tracking)
  • WireGuard tunnel for secure IDE connection

Cons

  • Requires platform engineering to set up
  • Terraform knowledge required for templates
  • More complex than hosted alternatives
  • AGPLv3 limits commercial embedding
  • Premium features behind $44/user/mo

Verdict

Coder is the right choice for organizations that need cloud development environments on their own infrastructure. The Terraform-based template system provides more flexibility than any hosted alternative, and the self-hosted model satisfies compliance requirements that rule out Gitpod or GitHub Codespaces.

For small teams or individual developers, Coder is overkill. Gitpod or GitHub Codespaces provide a simpler hosted experience with less setup. Coder’s value is for organizations with platform engineering teams, compliance requirements, and multi-cloud infrastructure.
