What Is Chat.sh?
Chat.sh is a help center built by a former Intercom customer after their search broke. The core pitch: instead of handing users a list of article titles that match keywords, it reads the question and writes an answer, citing the specific pages it drew from.
The setup is unusual for the category. It lives in a folder on your existing site — yoursite.com/help, yoursite.com/guide, whatever you name it. No subdomain. No separate analytics. No monthly bill after the one-time purchase.
Key Features
AI-Powered Search
This is the headline feature. A customer types a question in natural language, and the search engine reads the question, retrieves relevant passages from your knowledge base, writes an answer, and shows which pages it used. The difference from traditional keyword search is significant: instead of “here are 5 articles that contain the word domain,” the user gets “Yes, you can point a custom domain. Here’s how, and here’s the page with full instructions.”
Self-Hosted on Your Domain
Most help centers give you a subdomain (help.yourcompany.com) or a branded third-party URL. Chat.sh serves from a folder on your existing site. The SEO implications are real: all that help content lives on your domain, contributing to your site’s authority rather than the help center vendor’s.
Clean URLs
Article URLs use human-readable slugs, not numeric IDs. Compare /guide/articles/add-a-custom-domain with /en/articles/8341022-add-a-custom-domain. Small detail, big difference for shareability and SEO.
LLM-Ready from Day One
Every article is available as Markdown. The entire help center can be copied as Markdown for pasting into ChatGPT or Claude. It supports llms.txt out of the box. This matters because customers increasingly ask AI assistants questions that your help center should answer — and if your content isn’t in a format AI can consume, you’re invisible in that channel.
Chat Messenger and Inbox (Coming Soon)
A widget for your app (so customers don’t have to leave the page they’re stuck on) and a team inbox for human handoff are both in development. The team inbox includes 3 seats in the one-time price, with additional seats at $10/month each.
Pricing Model
The pricing is deliberately anti-SaaS. Free tier: 50 pages, 100 AI answers per month, hosted on a chat.sh subdomain, no credit card. Paid: $399 one-time for your own domain, 1,000 pages, 1,000 AI credits per month. Additional AI credits are $20 per 1,000, also one-time.
The price increases with each major feature shipped ($399 now, $499 after messenger, $599 after inbox). Early buyers lock in the lowest price and get listed on the customers page with a backlink. That’s a smart acquisition mechanic for early-stage.
Who Is This For?
SaaS teams that are either paying too much for Intercom’s help center, frustrated with generic keyword search, or want their help content on their own domain for SEO. Also relevant for teams that want their docs consumable by AI assistants via llms.txt — a growing requirement as more customers use ChatGPT/Claude to troubleshoot instead of browsing help articles.
Pros
- AI search actually answers questions, not just lists articles
- Self-hosted on your domain (SEO benefit)
- One-time payment, no subscription
- LLM-ready with llms.txt and Markdown export
- Clean, human-readable URLs
- Free tier with no credit card
- Social link preview cards for each article
Cons
- Chat messenger and inbox not yet shipped
- AI credits can run out on high-traffic sites
- Solo founder product — support capacity is an open question
- No API for programmatic article management yet
- Price increases with each feature release
Verdict
Chat.sh makes a specific bet: that the help center’s job is to answer the customer’s question, not to return a list of possibly-relevant articles. AI search makes this possible, and the self-hosted-on-your-domain approach adds genuine SEO value that subdomain-based competitors can’t match.
The one-time pricing is refreshing in a category dominated by per-seat monthly subscriptions. For small SaaS teams with fewer than 1,000 help articles, the $399 one-time cost compares favorably to the $89+/month that Intercom or Zendesk charges for similar functionality.
The main risk is the solo-founder profile and the not-yet-shipped messenger and inbox. If you need those features today, this isn’t ready. If you primarily need a great help center with AI search on your own domain, it’s worth evaluating now to lock in the lower price.
