What Is Appwrite?

Appwrite is an open-source backend server that provides authentication, databases, storage, serverless functions, messaging, and realtime subscriptions for web and mobile applications. It runs as a set of Docker containers and can be self-hosted on any infrastructure, or used through Appwrite Cloud.

Appwrite positions itself as a complete backend replacement. Instead of stitching together separate services for auth, database, storage, and functions, Appwrite provides all of them through a unified API with SDKs for web, iOS, Android, Flutter, and server-side runtimes.

Key Features

Document Database

Appwrite uses MariaDB internally but exposes a document-oriented API. You create collections (tables), define attributes (columns), and query documents with a builder API. The database supports relationships, indexes, and permissions at the document level.

Authentication

Email/password, phone, magic links, social logins (30+ providers), anonymous sessions, and multi-factor authentication. The auth system integrates with the database permissions: documents can be restricted to specific users, teams, or roles.

Serverless Functions

Write functions in Node.js, Python, PHP, Ruby, Dart, Swift, Kotlin, or Java. Functions can be triggered by HTTP requests, scheduled events, or database events. Each function runs in an isolated container.

Messaging

Send email, SMS, and push notifications through a unified API. Connect your own providers (Mailgun, Twilio, APNS, FCM) and send messages programmatically or from the Appwrite console.

Who Is This For?

Pros

  • Open source and self-hostable (Docker)
  • SDKs for web, iOS, Android, Flutter, and more
  • Auth + database + storage + functions + messaging
  • Lower pricing than competitors ($15/mo Pro)
  • Multi-language function support
  • Active community

Cons

  • Document database is less powerful than PostgreSQL
  • Self-hosting requires Docker and server management
  • Smaller ecosystem than Firebase or Supabase
  • Query API is less flexible than SQL
  • Cloud offering is newer than competitors

Verdict

Appwrite is the best BaaS for mobile developers who want to self-host. The multi-platform SDKs (especially Flutter) and the Docker-based architecture make it easy to run your own backend. The messaging service (email, SMS, push) is a feature most competitors don’t include.

The tradeoff against Supabase is clear: Supabase gives you PostgreSQL and SQL; Appwrite gives you a document API and broader language support for functions. If you need a relational database, Supabase is better. If you need multi-platform mobile SDKs and self-hosting simplicity, Appwrite wins.
